Hi Reader, Recently, my students traveled (virtually!) to one of the most incredible places on Earth: the GalĂĄpagos Islands. These islands are bursting with wildlife that canât be found anywhere else, making them the perfect destination to spark curiosity and wonder in kids. I have to admit, before we started, I wasnât sure if my class was going to burst out laughing at the name âblue-footed boobies.â But surprisingly, not one giggled! They just accepted it as the name of a bird, and we moved right along. Sometimes, kids will remind you how naturally curious and open-minded they can be when learning about the world. đž The GalĂĄpagos âBig 5â We StudiedHere are the five animals we focused on and a few fun facts they loved learning! đŚ GalĂĄpagos Sea Lions â They love to nap in the sun and play in the water. You can often see them lounging right on park benches and docks! đBlue-Footed Boobies â Those bright blue feet arenât just for show. Males lift them up and dance to attract a mate â the bluer, the better! đ˘ Giant Tortoises â These slow-moving giants can live over 100 years and weigh more than 500 pounds. They even helped name the islands â GalĂĄpagos means âtortoiseâ in Spanish. đŚ Marine Iguanas â The worldâs only sea-swimming iguana! They dive into the ocean to eat algae, then bask on the rocks to warm up afterward. đ§ GalĂĄpagos Penguins â The only penguins that live north of the equator! They stay cool by swimming in the cold currents around the islands. đ¨ Bringing the GalĂĄpagos to Life in Our ClassroomAfter learning about each animal, I showed my students how to sea lions, flamingos, and blue footed boobies using crayons and chalk pastels. We turned their artwork into a mini âGalĂĄpagos Galleryâ by setting up small areas around the room for each habitat. Students could walk around and admire each otherâs work like they were visiting the islands themselves. To make it even more fun, students brought in stuffed animals from home to add to our display. We had flamingos and sea turtles, joining our island adventure! đď¸ Extend the AdventureIf youâd like to bring the GalĂĄpagos Islands to your classroom, Iâm offering 10% off my lesson âPassport Adventures: The GalĂĄpagos Islands.â đ Use the code: PASSPORT10 at checkout. Hi Reader, This week, weâre âtravelingâ to London, England, and it is one of my favorite places to bring into the classroom during December. The history, traditions, and festive feeling make it such a rich learning experience for students. One fun connection is nutcrackers. While many people associate them with Germany because of the ballet, nutcrackers became popular across Europe, including in England, as decorative Christmas figures. They open the door to conversations about European...
Hi Reader, December is the perfect time to travel north with your students, at least in spirit. This week, I am spotlighting Quebec, Canada, to introduce students to our neighbor to the north while celebrating culture, language, food, and winter traditions. đ Teaching About Our U.S. Neighbor Canada is the second-largest country in the world and shares the longest international border with the United States. Many students do not realize just how closely connected our countries are through...
Hi Reader, This weekâs classroom journey takes us to one of the most breathtaking places on Earth: Santorini. Known for its white-washed buildings, iconic blue-domed churches, and sunsets that look straight out of a painting, Santorini is a magical destination to bring into your classroom. Welcome to Santorini đď¸ Where Even the Land Tells a Story Santorini wasnât always shaped like a crescent. Thousands of years ago, a massive volcanic eruption caused the center of the island to collapse,...
