🚇Teaching Kids About a Subway System?

Hi Reader,

Did you know that Stockholm, Sweden has the world's longest art exhibit? It can be found underground in their subway system! Many of the subway stations there have been painted and decorated in their own unique ways, making riding the subway so much more enjoyable.

My class pretended to travel to Stockholm this week. Now, we don't have subways down here in south Florida, so I had to show them some pictures and videos of ones in New York City. We took a look at several different stations in Stockholm and the students quickly realized how different NYC's stations are than Stockholm's. They decided to add some of their own creative flair to Stockholm's.

Each student got to design their own subway station and give it a name. We made a replica of Stockholm's subway system (which is surprisingly easy to do) out of red, green, and blue construction paper and put it on our classroom bulletin board. I printed a few pictures of some of the real stations and put them in their rightful places on our map. Then the students got to place their own stations on the map, thoughtfully considering what color line it would be on. I loved seeing their creativity! One student created a "Wicked" themed station with green and pink. Another student made an ice cream station and drew lots of ice cream cones.

This mini art lesson has been added to Passport Adventures: Stockholm, Sweden. If you are interested in the entire lesson, click on the picture below.

However, I am offering the art lesson as a free giveaway to my email subscribers. This miniature unit consists of information on Stockholm's subway system, an explanation on how to create your own replica of it, and pictures to print to add to your own bulletin board. You can download it right here:

Let me know if you use this with your students. I'd love to see how it turns out. Have a wonderful week!

Hi Reader, My husband and I are traveling in South America right now. We had a 10 hour layover in Bogotá, Colombia on our way down here, which was perfect because it gave us the opportunity to leave the airport for awhile and explore. This city is so colorful! We took a guided tour through La Candelaria, which is Bogotá's oldest neighborhood. It was established in 1538 and its Spanish-style buildings and cobblestone streets date back centuries. One of the many cobblestone streets in Bogotá...

Hi Reader, This week I am going to let one of my students take over teaching. Why? Because it's almost the end of the year and I'm exhausted...KIDDING! 🤣 My class will be "traveling" to Haiti on Friday. Several of my classroom families are from Haiti. One of my students, Laurryn, is extremely proud that her dad is from there. Her eyes lit up when I told the class last week we were heading to Haiti...the class has been waiting all year for this day! 🤔So how I am going to have a 6 year old...

Hi Reader, It's hard to believe, but here we are, just a few weeks from the finish line. You've taught lessons, wiped tears, tied shoes, cheered kids on, and probably answered a thousand questions a day. You've shown up, even on the hardest mornings. And you've created a space where your students feel safe, seen, and inspired. That's not small. That's magic. These final weeks can feel long and emotional- full of energy, excitement, and exhaustion. But they're also a time of celebration,...
