🎨An Art Lesson about Bogota

Hi Reader,

My husband and I are traveling in South America right now. We had a 10 hour layover in Bogotá, Colombia on our way down here, which was perfect because it gave us the opportunity to leave the airport for awhile and explore. This city is so colorful! We took a guided tour through La Candelaria, which is Bogotá's oldest neighborhood. It was established in 1538 and its Spanish-style buildings and cobblestone streets date back centuries.

Street art is everywhere here. Bogotá has embraced graffiti as a legitimate art form, and La Candelaria is at the center of it. You’ll find colorful murals telling stories of Colombian history, politics, and culture often created by local and international street artists.

It got me thinking about future art projects in my classroom this coming year. I can't wait to show kids some of the murals in Bogotá and see what kind of murals they could create in our classroom. All it takes is some paper, paint, and some inspiration. Take your students to Bogotá virtually and have them create their own murals, either individually or as a group.

This is one simple way to tie in a little social studies with art. 😀

I'll be sharing more over the summer about different ideas I've been inspired by while I'm here in South America. Stay tuned!

Hi Reader, This week I am going to let one of my students take over teaching. Why? Because it's almost the end of the year and I'm exhausted...KIDDING! 🤣 My class will be "traveling" to Haiti on Friday. Several of my classroom families are from Haiti. One of my students, Laurryn, is extremely proud that her dad is from there. Her eyes lit up when I told the class last week we were heading to Haiti...the class has been waiting all year for this day! 🤔So how I am going to have a 6 year old...

Hi Reader, It's hard to believe, but here we are, just a few weeks from the finish line. You've taught lessons, wiped tears, tied shoes, cheered kids on, and probably answered a thousand questions a day. You've shown up, even on the hardest mornings. And you've created a space where your students feel safe, seen, and inspired. That's not small. That's magic. These final weeks can feel long and emotional- full of energy, excitement, and exhaustion. But they're also a time of celebration,...

Hi Reader, Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! I hope you feel appreciated every day as an educator, but this week especially. 💕 Ople: The New Teacher App I'm excited to share about a new mobile app I recently came across that is made for teachers. Ople is designed to connect educators so they can share what works in their classrooms. It was first released in October 2024, is currently available in North America, and will be available worldwide soon. Ople is similiar to Instagram and TikTok...
